Next week, November 12-14th, the 7th International Dialogue Platform on Forecast-based Financing is taking place in Berlin. The platform is organized by the German Red Cross (GRC), World Food Program, German Humanitarian Assistance, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Climate Center of Red Cross and Red Crescent and brings together humanitarian actors, meteorologists, climate scientists, national governments as well as decision-makers and researchers. The platform aims to improve and to assess the current approaches around Forecast-based Financing and its practical implementation.
Forecast-based Financing also is an important topic within the Missing Maps initiative and the collaboration of HeiGIT and GRC. Therefore, Melanie Eckle (HeiGIT) will be at the platform to learn about and to discuss the latest ideas on utilizing user-generated data and geoinformation technology for Forecast-based Financing.
Melanie will present OpenStreetMap, the work of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, Missing Maps and HeiGIT at the breakout session “So much data, so little time: Getting the risk and impact data right for impact-based forecasting“. The session is hosted by 510/Netherland Red Cross, IFRC and the Climate Center and will assess the existing data demand, data supply and data infrastructure to support anticipatory action. Current challenges as well as approaches to collectively overcome these challenges will be discussed, looking at data sharing and advocating for better data quality and scale.
Attendees of the Dialogue Platform are furthermore invited to join the Missing Maps mapathon on Wednesday, 13th. The mapathon is facilitated by Katharina Lorenz (German Red Cross) and Melanie in the scope of the OSM Geoweek. Attendees will learn about the impact of mapping for Forecast-based Financing and will furthermore have the chance to directly support a GRC project around Forecast-based Action in Central Asia. No previous knowledge necessary as an introduction will be provided.
The GRC mapping project is also supported by four further mapathons in Germany that are happening at the same evening- at the Geographical Institute at Heidelberg University, and universities in Hannover, Würzburg and Göttingen. We will be connected with the other mapathon attendess throughout the evening to check our process towards our collaborative mapping goal.
