Meet HeiGIT and Discover Our AI and Anticipatory Action Related Projects at the Global Dialogue Platform in Berlin

Join us at this year’s Global Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Humanitarian Action, themed “Mainstreaming Anticipatory Action: Collaboration in Complex Contexts.” This topic has been a focal point for HeiGIT over the past few years, and its prominence as the core theme of this year’s event underscores its relevance in today’s humanitarian landscape.

How can we best involve users and beneficiaries in anticipatory action (AA) processes? How can we ensure that all relevant voices are heard and included? And how can we leverage technology and AI to enhance our workflows while maintaining quality and utilizing cutting-edge solutions? These are key questions we explore in our projects, and we’re excited to discuss these ideas further with you at the Global Platform at the end of October.

In the session, “Demystifying Artificial Intelligence for Anticipatory Action” (Thursday 24th,10:30 am- 1 pm) led by HeiGIT, we will explore the potentials, impacts, and risks of AI in humanitarian contexts, especially throughout the AA cycle. Through inputs from HeiGIT, German Red Cross, Deltares, World Food Program (WFP), FCDO, Clear Global, Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, CARE, Universidade do Acre UFAC and Welthungerhilfe this session will provide a concise introduction to AI, showcase various use cases from the humanitarian field, and offer an ethical perspective on our approaches in a World Cafe setting. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn, discuss, and even test AI-related applications— aiming to alleviate any fears surrounding this technology and allow a better understanding of its impact.

We will also present HeiGIT’s technical support for the Locust AA project in Somalia during the session titled “Hopping to Conclusions – Outpacting Locusts with Anticipatory Action,” led by the German Red Cross (GRC), on Wednesday 23rd (2:30- 3:30 pm CET). Together with the Somaliland Red Crescent Society (SRCS), we will provide insights into the historical impact assessment of locust infestations in Somalia, discuss the proposed anticipatory actions and triggers, and highlight the resulting challenges in developing an Early Action Protocol.
