Last month we started the Open Healthcare Access Map. Initially, only a few countries were featured. Gradually, more countries and regions are now being added. Today we release all countries of Sub-Saharan Africa.
The web application is available here: https://apps.heigit.org/healthcare_access/.
Please note that this is still a prototype and feedback on improvements and desired functionalities is very welcome. You can reach us at this email address.
With Sub-Saharan Africa, we now cover a region with which we actually started our journey of accessibility analyses a little less than a year ago. Now we are finally able to present the results in a much more accessible way. For each country, we provide different facility types and scale levels.
According to WorldPop data, Sub-Saharan Africa is home to 1.160 billion people. Our analysis shows that 572 million (49.3%) of these live within a 60-minute drive of any healthcare facility. 452 million (38.9%) live within 30 minutes and 288 million (24.79%) live within 10 minutes. The following map shows the distribution of accessibility on the hexagon scale (zoom level8) across the whole subcontinent.
Once again we highly appreciate your feedback on the app! Please feel free to reach out via mail.
