HeiGIT will present two sessions on openrouteservice.
ORSTools – using a global routing engine directly from QGIS
Monday, June 2 2025, 16:30–17:00 (Europe/Stockholm), Statisten
Getting from A to B fast and efficiently is central to mobility analysis and requires both road network data and a route calculation algorithm capable of using it. This session introduces openrouteservice (ORS), the largest free and open-source routing engine based on OpenStreetMap (OSM) data that currently exists, and its integration with QGIS through the ORSTools plugin. Participants will learn about the structure and limitations of OSM data, the core functions of ORS (such as routing, isochrones, and matrix calculations) and how these are made accessible in QGIS for spatial analysis and modeling through the ORSTools Plugin. Real-world examples will showcase applications ranging from personal route planning to automated workflows in research and practice.
ORSTools – Harnessing the Power of Routing inside QGIS
Tuesday, June 3 2025, 11:00–12:30 (Europe/Stockholm), Wadström
This workshop session will provide a more in-depth exploration of the capabilities of the ORSTools plugin for QGIS. Participants will explore several analyses enabled by the plugin and the features it provides. This includes both using the processing algorithms for comprehensive analyses as well as using it as a tool for personal route planning. The workshop will not only provide information on the basic usage of ORSTools and automatic calculations of routes from pre-existing data. It also covers reachability anaylses using isochrones, calculations of large-scale time and distance matrices and the automation of this processes work.
The session includes example data, but you are welcome to bring your own data. Make sure to have some basic knowledge of QGIS, an account at openrouteservice.org and the latest version of the ORSTools plugin installed.
