The Robert and Christine Danziger Scholarship supports outstanding doctoral students from West and Central Africa (with particular emphasis on applicants from Ghana), who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in Geography (specializing in Geoinformatics) or Political Science at Heidelberg University. Applicants are expected to be in the process of applying for a doctoral position at Heidelberg University and to be among the best in their research field.
The scholarship provides a monthly stipend of 1,500 € for up to 36 months. Applications are open from 15 September 2025 to 15 March 2026.
Prospective scholars are encouraged to explore dynamic research opportunities within the GIScience Research Group and ongoing projects at HeiGIT. Engage in innovative basic and applied research at the crossroads of geography and computational sciences, with thematic focuses on volunteered geographic information (VGI), big spatial data analytics, smart mobility, and humanitarian aid, including disaster management. A close collaboration with HeiGIT facilitates the translation of research into practical solutions.
Our colleague Francis Andorful has been supported by the Robert and Christine Danziger Scholarship since 2023 and is pursuing a doctorate in the field of geoinformatics at GIScience Research Group. He states, that the scholarship provided the stability and peace of mind to fully engage in this intensive learning process. “The scholarship acts as a cushion softening the pressures that naturally come with the highs and lows of PhD life.
