Tropical forests are home to a high level of biodiversity and make an important contribution to mitigating global climate change. The REDD+ mechanisms (Reducing Emissions form Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries), adopted in 2009 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), aims to protect these forests and manage them sustainably. There were high hopes that REDD+ would contribute not only to climate protection but also to biodiversity conservation. However, it has since become apparent that REDD+ has not delivered these promises. The presentation takes a closer look at the REDD+ mechanism, highlights pitfalls, and also addresses certificate trading for forest-bound carbon.
