OpenStreetMap Road Monitor

Real-time Quality Monitoring of OpenStreetMap (OSM) Road Networks

Overview

OSM Road Monitor is a project dedicated to the real-time monitoring of the quality and updates of the OpenStreetMap (OSM) road network. It aims to address the challenges of keeping road data up-to-date for applications such as navigation, routing, logistics, and fleet management. The project is particularly focused on scenarios where rapid updates to road data are critical, such as during natural disasters, where roads may be blocked or destroyed.

Conventional road data sources often have significant delays in updates, with cycles ranging from weekly to several months. These delays can hinder effective decision-making. OSM, as an open and collaboratively updated mapping platform, offers a promising alternative for real-time road data monitoring.

Project Goals

Providing real-time quality monitoring of the OSM road network.

Enabling the rapid collection and analysis of OSM mapping activity, especially during crisis situations.

Tracking and reporting OSM contributions related to road data.

Offering tools for monitoring and receiving updates on mapping activity based on specific conditions (e.g., thresholds or hashtags).

Generation of contributions

The project will begin with the collection and storage of OSM contributions in a OLAP database, ensuring efficient querying and real-time updates. The database schema will be optimized to handle enriched OSM data and spatial indexing (e.g. H3).

Dashboard and Reporting Tools

The ohsomeNow stats dashboard will be optimized and extended to provide insights into all OSM edits. Additional functionalities will be implemented, allowing users to subscribe to weekly email reports on mapping activity related to specific hashtags or conditions.

User Management

HeiGIT account logins will be integrated to provide personalized access to mapping statistics, giving users tailored insights into their contributions.

Activity Report

The project will also build a monitoring system where users can set thresholds for mapping activity and receive alerts when these thresholds are met. Additionally, research will be conducted on activity reporting, vandalism detection, and other real-time analytics related to OSM contributions.
