In the upcoming week, 13th – 17th November, the annual Geography Awareness Week will take place. The theme week, organized by the National Geographic Society, aims to show the importance of geography in many areas of everyday life and the opportunities this discipline offers to tackle key challenges such as climate change. HeiGIT organizes and participates in several events throughout the week, such as “Piloting Drones”, “Mapathon with German Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders”, “Creating Maps Together”, “School Visit including an UndercoverEisAgenten Mapathon”. You can find a detailed list of the events below.
In Heidelberg, the Geography Awareness Week is organized by student initiatives (the Student Council, EGEA Heidelberg and the working group Feminist Geographies Heidelberg) at the Institute of Geography at Heidelberg University, as well as student assistants at HeiGIT. However, there will be events in the whole of Europe, for which GeoDACH, the representative body for German-speaking geography students from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, EGEA (European Geographers Association) and afneg (representative body for French geography students) have taken over as main organizers. It will be possible to submit events and win prizes.
HeiGIT events
HeiGIT will open the theme week with Piloting Drones. At 3 pm Ingolf Bayer will introduce the method of scientific data collection with drones, after which we will go outside to actually fly the drone (INF 348).
On Monday evening (6 pm), we will watch the documentary “Breaking Boundaries: Die Wissenschaft hinter ‘Unser Planet’”. Kirsten von Elverfeldt will be moderating the discussion afterwards (Berliner Straße 48).
On Tuesday evening, we will join a Mapathon, which is hosted by the German Red Cross (GRC) and Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Everyone is welcome and no previous knowledge is required! So feel free to bring friends and fellow students who do not study geography. Do bring your laptop and preferably a mouse, everything else will be provided! Snacks and drinks will be there too (7 pm, Berliner Straße 48).
As part of the #30DayMapChallenge we will be Creating Maps Together on Wednesday evening. Here you can already look up the different themes and get creative! The created maps will be featured on a recap blogpost on the HeiGIT blog and GIScience blog as well as HeiGIT’s social media channels and on the student council’s instagram. (5 pm, Berliner Straße 48)
The UndercoverEisAgenten project is visiting a school on Friday morning to give an introduction to the subject and the students are going to map permafrost. We are very happy to be able to reach students and visit schools in doing so.
