HeiGIT at XP Days Germany: Insights into Working in Floating Teams

Two of our colleagues, Johannes Link and Jakob Schnell, are set to attend XP Days Germany 2024, where they’ll be sharing their insights on working in floating teams at HeiGIT.

XP Days Germany is a community-driven, participatory conference for software developers, designers and testers, offering a space to exchange ideas and experiences. The conference will be held in Stuttgart from October 10 to 11, featuring various keynotes, presentations and workshops focused on topics like extreme programming, agile software development and software architecture.

Talk: Ein Jahr FAST – Effekte, Probleme und Stellschrauben (One Year with FAST – Effects, Problems and Adjustments)

Thursday 10.10.2024, 2:15 p.m., Location: Kleiner Saal

FAST (Fluid Scaling Technology) is an approach where teams self-organize and rotate frequently. What was once an abstract idea to integrate open space principles into daily work is now gaining traction in the agile community.

At HeiGIT, several teams have been working successfully in floating teams for over a year. Last year at the XP Days 2023, Johannes and Jakob reported on the first steps HeiGIT took towards the implementation of this approach, as well as on the experiments conducted in advance.

In this year’s talk, Johannes and Jakob review our experiences with FAST and seek answers to these questions:

  • What kind of tasks are suitable for FAST?

  • How much knowledge exchange and collective learning really happens?

  • How do I know what the rest of the company is working on?

  • Where can I make adjustments to optimize the process and:

  • Is this still open space at all? Is it still agile at all?
